Baddest Witch In Town

My newest digital image.  I was getting bored with my work so I thought I would go back to basics for awhile. The model for this image can be found here.  I am going to show the steps I took to make this final image above.

This is the actual image I started with - the original with the edges darkened - didn't have to have the edges dark but that is how I started.

I wanted something happening in the BG since I wasn't going to extract the girl and put her on some other BG.  I used the above pattern and layered it side by side over the original. I completely masked out (layer mask) the girl 100% and partially masked out portions of this pattern probably 20-30% - just in places. I used a blending mode of lighten 64% opacity. Below is the result.

Next I layered this texture over the whole image masked girl where needed.  I used a blending mode of Color Dodge opacity 100%.  I added an adjustment layer Hue/Saturation (Saturation -58 lightness +9)  I clipped it to the above two textures. The results are below.

Next I added bare tree images in the background - blending mode Multiply opacity 65% and masked out over the girl and where I didn't want tree branches. Below is the result.

Next I added some text to the bottom of the image for interest. Masked out where I didn't want it.  It was a png image - soft light - opacity about 85%  I didn't want it too dark but did want to see it.  Result below.

I next added a few bird brushes and an edge image below blending mode screen opacity 63%.

Which leads me back to the top image my finished piece.  Hope this is helpful. The next image I will probably do differently but that is how I did this one.  I could have used other textures, other blending modes and the result would have been different - that is why this is so much fun - you never know what you are going to get. Is this the best way or only way of course not but it's how I did it today.

Breathe - Week 23 Challenge

My Week 23 Challenge Breathe.  From a photo I took last summer at the lake.  The challenge - "This piece should invite us to let go of whatever might otherwise be troubling us in our lives, and give us a few precious, lazy minutes where we can stop fidgeting with our daily concerns and imagined worries and dramas ... and just take a moment to enjoy something beautiful ... and perhaps find something extraordinary quietly awaiting us there". Below is the original photo.

Patchwork - Created for Digitalmania image flickr group challenge. This weeks challenge was the artist CHRISTINE PELOQUIN a mixed media collage artist whose style suggests many possibilities for those who work in digital art. This was a challenge for me.  I thought about how to go about this and figured I would start the same way Cristine Peloquin does. I have a large number of interesting papers so I tore some up and handmade a collage.  I scanned in the collage - see the image below, and this was my base to start the image.  I added the face (hard light blending mode) but I could have really added anything to this patchwork base - a crow for example (and maybe I will) - but Peloquin works manly with a face or figure.  Then I proceeded to add other layers on top - lettering, alphabets, writing, other collage pieces (different blending modes but mostly multiply).  What was great about my initial base collage is I could digitally cut pieces to layer on top - I wasn't really happy with the brown piece in the original base so I just cut a piece of pink out and replaced it digitally.  Now I have this digital collage saved so I can used it for a base again, a texture for blending or I can just use pieces of it.  I am going to make a few more of these.  What fun and it makes you think having such a patterned piece for a base in an image.  I flipped the image below to the right for my finished piece and moved the face around until I got a good placement with the patterns. I really like the flickr group Digitalmania - the challenges are great to get you out of a rut.  I am going to go back through their archives and see what other artists they have used as their weekly challenge.

Ocean One

This image is from a photo I took at the fishing docks in Pt. Pleasant today. I'm not sure how I feel about what I have done with it but at least it is a bit different for me. Lots of great stuff down on the docks and that is Gull Island in the background. All those white dots are gulls. Too bad the tide was so low. I added lots of textures, blending modes, grunge and some faded writing.

Below is the original picture.

In The Moonlight

So I love digital challenges and have joined a number of groups on flickr that offer challenges.  I found this group called Digitalmania that offers challenges that involve taking inspiration and learning from the work of artists in many styles. Each week the name of an artist or a particular style of digital art will be posted. It is hoped that members will find inspiration that will allow them to create artpieces which include some references to the artist's style and subjects.  How cool is that!!!!

This weeks artist is Christian Schloe and I happen to love his work.  Above is my try at an image in his style.  Below is the image I drew my inspiration from.  Here is a link to see more of Christian Schole's work or you can Google him.

In this challenge you are going to attempt to take a piece of your favorite music ... and create an image that not only captures how the music makes you feel, but amplifies its meaning in some way, through the way you choose to express it visually.

My pick Sarah McLachlan - "Angel" one of my absolute favorite songs.
